Data-set 8:

Mature, managed pine-dominated forests of state lands of southern Kuhmo

Sampling frame: Mature, pine-dominated state-forests in southern Kuhmo. Only forests which have been treated by thinnnings during the last 30 years have been included. Pine pogs and other paludified ares were excluded.

Field methods: 0.5 hectare study plots (transects).

Selection of study plots: Finnish Forest and Park Service provided a list of forestry compartments fullfilling the selection criteria. Of the listed compartments Timo Kuuluvainen selected 11 compartments "semirandomly" for the study. The location of a study plot, "transect", was randomized to each study-compartment so that the distance of the study plot from the compartment edge was, if possible, more than 50 meters.

Amount of data: 11 independent 0.5 hectare study plots. The sample plots included altogether 1129 dead trees, of which 393 were more than 10 cm thick.

Species included in the study: All wood inhabiting polypores and some other wood inhabiting fungi, see a list of target species.

Field workers: Mariko Lindgren. Riina Ala-Risku, Ismo Eriksson, Kirsi Eskelinen, Pia Juntunen, Tuuli Mäkinen, Olli Manninen, Petteri Tolvanen and Katja Viberg assisted for various periods.

Time and duration of field work: August 17. - September 25. 1998. Altogether about eight days.

Funding: Part of the research project "Structure and dynamics of natural and managed boreal forest landscapes - Linking landscape pattern, stand structure and species diversity", financed by FIBRE (Finnish Biodiversity Research Programme), Academy of Finland. Specimen identification work has also been supported by the Mycology Department of Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki.

Areas selected (sampled) for the study:
Selectively cut forests:

  • Two study plots from the surroundings of Jauhovaara nature protection area
  • One study plot close to Matovaara, east of the Hiidenportti National Park
  • One study plot close to the Kuhmo town center
  • Four study plots from the Jämäsvaara-Katajakankaat -area, south of the Kuhmo town center
  • Three study plots from eastern Kuhmo, in the surroundings of Kiekinkoski

Results: Preliminary species results from the Jämäsvaara-Katajakankaat area has been given to the Forest and Park Service.
