Data-set 5:

All forest land in northeastern Kainuu, Finland

Sampling frame: All forest land in the municipality of Suomussalmi and in the northern part of the municipality of Kuhmo were included in the sampling. Kuhmo was divided along the same division line (the River Oulujoki watercourse) that was used in the old-growth forest inventory programme to separate areas belonging to the southern (phase I) and northern (phase II) Finland.

Field methods: 100 hectare study quadrates.

Selection of study plots: Random sampling. First 10 x 10 km squares, delimited by gridlines of the national uniform grid system (Grid 27 E; Heikinheimo & Raatikainen 1981), were randomly selected (the same squares were also used for sampling in the data set 6. Study quadrates were placed systematically in the middle of each square (coordinates xxx4:xx4).

Amount of data: Four independent study quadrates, each including one 0.5 hectare study plot (total 2 hectares). Tree- and dead tree- and biotope data were collected along altogether four kilometers of sampling lines (total area 4 ha). The sample plots include 638 dead trees, of which 297 were more than 10 cm thick. One study quadrate (Saarensuo) hit an old-growth forest inventory area. Study plots representing managed forest (three other areas) included altogether 226 dead trees, of which 96 were more than 10 cm thick.

Species included in the study: All wood inhabiting polypores and some other wood inhabiting fungi, see a list of target species.

Field workers: Mariko Lindgren.

Time and duration of field work: August - September 1996. Altogether five or six days.

Funding: Field work was funded by the Finnish Forest and Park Service. This financing covered materials, and salary and travell expences for Lindgren.

Areas selected (sampled) for the study:
Kuhmo:

  • Heiskala (7124:594)
    Suomussalmi:
  • Kalloaho (7254:594)
  • Vuoriniemi (7204:594)
  • Saarensuo (7244:584) (Part of the Suoniemensuo mire prorection area)
All areas are located below 300 meters above sea level and only Saarensuo was included in the old-growth forest inventory programme in the spring 1995.

Results: I presented some results of the dead-tree-data and preliminary species data of the "managed forests" (joined with data set 2, Saarensuo area not included) in a presentation for the Mycological Society of Oulu.

Notes: This data is relatively small, but it can be joined with data-set 2.
